Loud Motorcycles are Illegal

GW Noise Logo

Loud motorcycles with illegal mufflers frequently use the Mount Vernon Memorial Highway and the GW Parkway, roaring through neighborhoods and past the Mount Vernon Estate. These loud motorcycles are blatantly illegal by county, state, and federal standards, and are by far the largest source of intrusive and harmful noise pollution in this area. Approximately 3 out of 4 motorcycles on these roads have illegal mufflers installed that make 10 to 100 times more noise than street legal mufflers. These same illegal modifications, referred to as tampering by several federal laws, make these motorcycles generate as much hydrocarbon air pollution as 80 automobiles.

The nearby Harley Davidson dealership has advertised for years: Maybe you just want that awesome earth quaking, window rattling exhaust that sets off car alarms as you ride on by. Want to make men dive out of the way and women grab their children and head inside and lock the doors? We can help with that too! 2 out of 18 advertised performance packages are described as street legal.

The noise from the hundreds of these inconsiderate motorists plying the roads every fair weather weekend can be heard inside homes over any activity, on weekdays this noise starts at 5am. Loud motorcycles are not appropriate for this residential and historic area. Almost all of the motorcycles on these roads are louder than a truck or bus, and some resemble an aircraft engine. Motorcycles using street legal mufflers are as loud as a normal car. Read more...
